according to the artist 'I joined and photographed Charlie Russell in 1992 to learn about his relationsip with the white [recessive gene of black bears] on Princess Royal Island off the B.C. coast. These were early years of his quest to forge a new relationship of mutual trust with bears. Two years later I joined him in Kamchatka, Russia on a 9 year study of grizzly bears.'

PLEASE NOTE: This lot was sold in an online benefit auction where all proceeds went to the Whyte Museum in Banff, Alberta and there was no Buyer's Premium.; According to the artist: 'this was created on location in the artist's small studio on Kurilskoye Lakes in 1999. Chico and Biscuit were 2 years old at the time and they could walk ice too think for heavier adult bears as they peered the depths for fish - it was late May.'
